Taking on a student has never been so rewarding!

Did you know that employing an apprentice comes with a wealth of different incentives to benefit your organisation?
Not only does an apprentice assist in your organisations productivity (therefore organically growing the company), but the cost of employment within your workforce can largely be covered via the UK Governments 'Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme'.
It's a Win-Win!

Existing Apprenticeship Incentive Schemes ('Young Persons' Recruitment Grant)

Over the last few years, the UK Government have had a permanent incentive in place for all employers who take on a 'young' workplace apprentice. If your new apprentice is aged 16 to 18 upon the start of their qualification, then your organisation will automatically be entitled to claim £1,000 as a non-repayable grant. This money will be supplied to you via your appointed training provider (such as HYA Training) and will be delivered in two £500 installments, one on the 90th day of learning, and the second on the 365th. This scheme also applies if your apprentice has an personal EHCP and is aged 23 or under.

  • You will not need to fill out any forms in order to 'claim' this incentive, your training provider will do this for you as part of the student enrolment process.

  • This grant is available to all employers, regardless of size or how you fund the qualification (levy/co-funded/government funded).

  • Once received, this grant can be used in any way your organisations desires, including support of existing staff members.

  • This grant cannot be transferred into your Apprenticeship Levy account (should you have one).

The New 'Plan For Jobs' Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme (Aug 2020 to Jan 2021)

Following the recent changes within the UK economy as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Chancellor brought in additional employer incentives in order to aid in the promotion and availbility of apprenticeship opportuntities. Whilst recruitment into any sector can be tough right now, we hope that these additional incentives will help to offset the cost of recruitment and induction, so that your workforce can continue to be ever more productive across the remainder of 2020.
This NEW incentive scheme includes additional non-repayable grants being made available to all companies, for apprentices of any age! Here's how it works:

  • Recruit any apprentice who is 24 years old or younger, to be able to claim a £2,000 incentive. This is paid per apprentice recruited.

  • Recruit an apprentice who is 25 or older and you will be able to claim a £1,500 incentive. Again, this is per apprentice recruited.

  • Therefore, for any apprentices aged 16 to 18 (or up to 23 with an EHCP), they would qualify for both this new scheme, as well as the existing 'Young Persons' recruitment grant (detailed above), meaning you would receive a total of £3,000!

  • All grants would need to be claimed by the employer via their Online Apprenticeship Portal account (which can be found HERE). Your training provider cannot do this for you - they will only be responsible for transferring up to £1,000 as part of the 'Young Persons' Recruitment Grant scheme. Details around how to make your claim will be provided by HYA Training as part of the standard apprentice recruitment process.

  • Apprentices must have started both their employment and apprenticeship between the dates of 1st August 2020 and 31st January 2021.

  • Payments will be made in installments, on the 90th and 365th day of their qualification. You will only need to register for once to receive both payments.

The New 'Plan For Jobs' Traineeship Incentive Scheme (Sep 2020 to Jan 2021)

In addition to the incentives made available for apprentice recruitment across the remainder of 2020, grants have also been made available for any employer wishing to take on a student as part of a Traineeship.
Lasting between six weeks and six months, a Traineship is the perfect way to introduce a young person to the world of work, whilst avoiding employment staffing expenditure. More information around recruiting a Trainee can be found here.
    Here's some further information:

  • Recruit any Trainee and receive a grant of £1,000.

  • The Traineeship must cover a minimum of 70 hours work experience within your organisation, up to a maximum of 240 hours. This time is not paid employment.

  • Up to 10 Trainees can be made eligible for this grant, per employer.

  • This grant is available to all employers, regardless of size.

  • Once received, this grant can be used in any way your organisations desires, including support of existing staff members.

  • This grant cannot be transferred into your Apprenticeship Levy account (should you have one).
